Waterfall Chart in Tableau

Waterfall charts effectively display the cumulative effect(Increasing step by step) of sequential positive and negative values. It will show you, where a value starts, ends and how it will be get incremented. So, we are able to see both the size of changes and the difference in values between consecutive data points.

Tableau needs one Dimension and one Measure to create a Waterfall chart.

  • Open Tableau and click on Connect to Data.

  • Then the Connect page will open, click on Microsoft Excel.

  • Navigate to the downloaded files, select Sample Superstore.xls excel file, which is a saved excel file, and clicks on Open.

  • Once the data source has been connected, open a new worksheet by clicking on sheet1.

  • The Sample Superstore excel file contains the below details.

  • We have to find the variation of Sales for each Sub-Category of Products.
  • Drag the dimension Sub-Category to the Columns shelf and the Measure Sales to the Rows shelf.
  • Sort the data in ascending order of sales value.
  • For this, use the sort option which appears in the middle of the vertical axis when you keep the mouse over it.
  • You will see the chart below.

  • Next, right-click on the SUM (Sales) value and Table calculation option from the drop-down.

  • Next, the Table calculation window will appear, in that select running total from the table calculation option.

  • Select the Chart type Gantt chart, the following graph will appear.

  • Right-click on analysis and select create a calculated field from the dropdown.

  • Name the calculated field as sales and mention the following formula for its value and click on Ok.

  • Drag the newly created calculated field (sales) to the size shelf under Marks Card.
  • Now, you will find a Waterfall chart created as below.

  • If you drag the sales measure to the color in the marks card, then you will see the waterfall chart with different shades as below.
