The domain name is the first entry point of the business
Your URL is the first thing your visitors will see. A good domain name can make a positive and lasting impression, while a bad domain name can send visitors running.
Now you are ready to start your own website, but before starting a website, you need to know a couple of things. The first thing that should come into your mind is what should be the domain name. The domain name is nothing but the URL.
When it comes to deciding the best domain names for your brand, most of us don't give it a second thought. We probably take it for granted. It's easy to fall into the presumption that getting a domain name for your business is simply for setting up a website and nothing more.
The website name is used from emails, links, and social channels, in both online and offline advertising, so choose wisely
For example, google.com, amazon.com.
So every single website will have its unique domain name and will be pointed to some IP addresses where you will place the website files. So this domain name is significant, today we are going to see a couple of tips to choose the domain name.
Let's understand what the things that you need to remember before buying a website name are.
There are free domain names you can get from various website builders that you use, such as Wordpress.com, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, etc.
To be more specific, these website builders give you a sub-domain not a domain.
So if we were to use our website name as an example again, a sub-domain would look something like:
A free sub-domain name is not good – especially if you want to build a long term business with your own unique branding.
This is why I always recommend spending a few bucks on getting a proper domain that you fully own. It will also help your branding.
A domain name can be registrable as a trademark if it functions to identify the source of particular goods or services.
When you try to buy a domain, make sure that you are not buying a domain name with a trademark word in it. The company/person who owns the trademark can sue your website; they don't sue you when you are small, but as you grow, there are chances that they may sue you.
Do not buy domain names similar to below :
Tesla boss Elon Musk has revealed how close his company came to being called Faraday after struggling to obtain the trademark for the name.
The Tesla Motors was trademarked in 1994 by a man named Brad Siewart, who was unwilling to sell to Mr. Musk's company when they approached him in 2004.
The first and foremost thing for any domain/website is the brand. Your Domain should always be your brand name.
First, you have to decide like you are building a brand or not. In case if you are building a brand, then make sure that your domain name is a brand.
It’s a less known fact, but Google and most other search engines give a rank bump to web pages that show a consistency in the domain name and business name.
While there is no direct or proven advantage of having a keyword-rich domain name on your SEO campaign, having a domain name that aligns with your brand name is a great branding hack. Also, a name consistency makes your brand name look credible in the eyes of your stakeholders.
For example, if you take Amazon, their brand is amazon, and their URL is amazon.com.
If I tell people to go for Amazon, then some people will go and search amazon.com only, and they will not be typing xyz.com.
So, whenever you are buying a domain name, then make sure that your business name matches your domain name. For example, if you have a business name something like chercher technologies Private Limited, then don't buy a domain like cherchertechnologiesprivatelimited.com; you should try to buy chercher.com.
This is the first tip that you need to keep in mind before buying a domain.
The second tip is the website name should be memorable, not only the website name but your brand name as well. So if you tell it to a person, the person should be able to keep it in mind.
For example, I have a website called chercher.tech, and it is my first website and the other one I am having pavanseo.com. The second one might be a little difficult to memorize.
Another example, amazon.com.
You might think that every person will search in Google; that's not the case with most of the people. When you say amazon.com, they will go to the URL bar, and they will try to type amazon.com, that's how it's going to work. Your domain name should be easy to type, and it is very important.
For example, if you are from a different language and you want to have a domain name in your language, then you have to think that whether only this particular language people are going to use this website or all over the country or across the globe is going to use your domain.
If your audiences are from all over the world, then try to go with the English word and don't choose it from local languages.
Keep your domain name short, and it is suggested to keep your domain name always less than ten letters. If it is more than ten letters, then it is difficult to memorize, and it is difficult to type.
For example, if you take any famous websites, you will see only 5 - 10 letters not more than ten letters. It is easy to remember, and it is easy to type.
Try calling a friend of yours and tell your domain name, if he is able to understand what you have said and spelled it then only buy that name.
Use keywords in your domain; for example, if your blog is about pets and your brand is about the pets, then try to have pets keyword in the domain name.
For example, cheesecake.com is the moment you say it to a person who is listening should understand the content of your website.
Whenever you buy a website, it should point to the exact things that you are going to have on your website.
Once you confirmed your website name with XYZ.com, there is always competition in the same domain space. There are different players, so you have to think of a unique name for your domain.
For example, amazon.com is your competition then you should never try to buy amazen.com. If you buy amazen.com, then amazon.com is going to push you down because people always go for the brand names when they know a particular brand.
When you are trying to compete with your competition, never buy a domain that sounds or spells similar to them.
When you buy your domain, you always keep in mind whether you are going to do the business locally or globally.
In case if you are doing business locally, then include the place in your website name where your business is located.
In case if you are doing the business locally, but if you're not going to have a shop at all, then you can use any name when you are buying the domain name.
Keep a room for expansion in your domain name; for example, if you have a website, something like catsanddogs.com or catsanddogscare.com. In case, in future, if you want to expand this particular cats and dogs domain into animals, then that becomes difficult, and once you establish a brand, then it is challenging to recreate another brand from it.
Always keep your domain with .com nobody is everyone is going with .io and .ai but most of the people trust .com rather than .io, .ai, .net or any other extension.
People try to look for a dot-com
For example, my domain name is chercher.tech, and I am having the extension of .tech, but what people search is chercher.tech most of the time.
If you see my search console you will see like most of the people are searching with chercher.com rather than chercher.tech
When you have localized extensions, you need to remember that people are going to think that domain is related to that particular area alone, so the user will not feel that it is for a global audience.
Always remember that .com is a better thing.
When your businesses located in the United States, you can definitely use .us extension but prefer with.com.
In case if your domain is in French or Spanish then go with the countries extension, for example in case of a France, it will go with a .fr if the majority of the searches are coming from France and if you have .fr domain, then it will give them the confidence to trust you.
Try to avoid numbers and hyphens and underscores, especially underscores and numbers in the domain name.
Sometimes you can use hyphens but never use underscores or numbers. Whenever you are using an underscore, then most of the people do not see an _ in domain names because it is at the bottom.
In case if you have two words and you want to split it, always try to go with hyphen rather than underscore and never use numbers.
When you have decided to create a brand, then you should buy more than one domain, at least two domain is required. The first and primary should be .com, and the secondary should be with your country-specific extension.
For example, Dominos have multiple website extension, but at the same time, they also have the website with .com extension as well.
If you think that nowadays too many extensions are present, which one should I purchase?
Then buy the .com, .us for the united states, and buy an extension that is related to your business. For example, dominos also have a domain name with pizza (dominos.pizza), but they are not using it.
Did you know that people commonly misspell amazon.com as amazn.com? Or google.com as googlr.com? But it doesn’t matter, because both companies have bought those incorrectly spelled domains and set them up to redirect to their correct domain. You can do that too. It’s a small investment that may bring in valuable traffic.
Some more embarrassing problems that arise with the wrong domain name occur when the URL can be read in ways it shouldn’t be.
For example, consider the domain name ‘Jennas-Side.com,’ made famous by the television show, 30 Rock. On paper, it might look okay (minus the dash!), but aloud, it sounds pretty bad.
So before you commit to a domain name, be sure to read it carefully and say it aloud, first.
Sometimes the words you choose will have an alternative meaning that you’re unaware of or even have a meaning in a foreign language that’s entirely different from what you intended.
Take your time to research every possible meaning of the words you’re choosing. You wouldn’t want to isolate or offend a portion of your customer base, simply out of ignorance.
A few Google searches will clear up any confusion that you may have surrounding the words you’ve chosen for the future of your website.
Mercedes-Benz entered the Chinese market under the brand name "Bensi," — which means "rush to die."
Registrar is one who registers your domain name with ICANN on behalf of you. It is not like you can keep any name you want. There are different domain name providers like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Domains.com, and even Google started with Google domains.
Let's consider only these three alone, I have experience with the GoDaddy and namecheap.com, and they provide better domain service compared with other domain providers.
Always try to prefer these three providers, and the registrars are not only crucial for buying the domain names, but it's also essential for search engines. For example, if Google has given some penalty to a particular domain registrar, then it is not only going to affect that registrar but also the people who registered under them.
So it is important to go with only big players with a domain name registration.
Don't buy a domain and hosting from the same provider, sometimes you might see ads like buy domain name along with hosting, or you might see something like buy one year of hosting and get a free website/domain name.
This is one of the tricks usually hosting companies use to keep you with them and never fall for this free thing. Always try to buy a domain name, never go with the free one.
For example, if you have a site with godaddy.com and not only GoDaddy provides domain but also they provide hosting as well. In case if you are buying a domain from GoDaddy, then don't buy hosting from them.
It becomes very difficult to move the domain from one provider to another provider when you are having hosting and the domain name with one provider.
Once you choose your website name and the very important thing is to buy it quickly because domains are something that people try to buy every now and then.
People buy domain names not only for business purposes but also just to block them. For example, if you take me as an example, I have another two or three websites, and I am just blocking them, but I do not have any business there.
Those website's names are toothclicp.com and toothbrace.com, and I thought like it might increase its value over the years, but it doesn't, but at the same time, I am NOT ready to give up those domains spaces.
So there are people like me as well who will hold a couple of domains, so buy the domains quickly once you decide the name.
Once you've bought the domain, the very important thing; if you want to change the domain name or the brand name, then change it within six months or lesser. After six months, never try to change your brand.
For example, I have bought a website called selenium-webdriver.com. The problem is selenium webdriver is the keywords of technology names selenium, and webdriver both means the same technology. I have just separated with the -. When I search selenium - webdriver in Google, other people whoever was a competition to me or who were the major players in the particular domain space, they were getting into the top results rather than me. Even when people were intentionally typing my website address, but they were not able to find my website because mine is listed on the third or fourth page of Google.
I changed the domain name into chercher.tech, but I did it within the three months, but people were searching for selenium-webdriver.com.
Don't change your website name frequently; I would suggest maximum only once you can change it - especially within six months, but once it's crossed six months, let's keep that particular domain.
In case if you are a person who is watching this video after one year or bought a domain and now if you are thinking of changing the domain name, then hold the old domain name.
For example, I had a website selenium-webdriver.com and still, I hold that particular website. I have redirected the old domain to my new domain. When people go to my old website, it will be redirected to my new website.
Don't change your name in case if you're changing the name always keep the old domain with you
