Installation of Text Editor for Git Operations

Text Editor: It is a software program which allows the user to input and edit their text definitions for Git operations.

Well, before we start with Git operations, first install some good text editor for our operating system.

where Notepad++ works well with our windows and also you are going to learn how to make Notepad++ accessible to command prompt and Git Bash and finally we will configure Notepad++ with Git.

Now I will show you how to download Notepad++ step by step as follow:

  • Select your preferred browser and Navigate to the page https://notepad-plus-plus.org
  • Once Notepad++ page has loaded in the system click on the Download button on left side of the page.

  • Once the installer has finished downloading open and click on the Run button.
  • Then it will ask for your preferred Language, select English.

  • Click Next on the license agreement page.

  • Once you go through the license agreement just click on I Agree.
  • Choose the default Installation location and click Next.

  • Now let us click on the Install button to install Notepad++.

  • Finally click on Finish, now your Notepad++ has installed in your OS.notepad-click-finish
  • And close the browser and see Notepad++ icon present on your Desktop.

Text Editor Configuration with Git

Now we are going to configure Notepad++ to Run from our command environment using Git Bash.

  • Now Open Git bash and type Notepad++
  • It returns with command not found hence exit from Git Bash.
  • The first step is to find out where Notepad++ has installed in your system.
  • Select the application click on the .exe file.

  • copy the address by right-clicking on the address bar.

  • Now click on my computer or This pc and right click and select properties.

  • It will take you to the control panel and items page, where you click on Advanced systems and settings then another page will open, select Environment variables.

  • Now it will be directed to Environment variables page, click on system variables and select path in that and click edit.

  • Now address path page will open, first enter semicolon to separate the address and paste the Notepad++ address which you copied before and click ok, ok ok and close all the pages.

  • Now you can verify by typing Notepad++ and press enter, if it is successful you will see a Notepad++ page on the screen.
